• Horizontal Flex Bar — a bar option that helps with positioning the framework.
• Post Coupler — connects supporting components to each other.
• Retractor Ring — forms the framework around the incision to which retraction mechanisms attach.
• Ratchet Mechanisms — clamp to the ring and hold the blades.
• Retractor Blades — provide the tissue retraction itself.

Step-by-Step Bookwalter Retractor Assembly

1. 1Position the Field Post. The field post is secured first because it carries the rest of the framework.
2. 2Attach the supporting bars. The horizontal bar provides structural support, while a horizontal flex bar can be used where additional positioning flexibility is needed.
3. 3Connect the required components. A post coupler is used to join supporting components so the framework holds its position.
4. 4Position the retractor ring. The ring is mounted so that it forms the retraction framework around the operative field.
5. 5Attach the ratchet mechanisms. Ratchets clamp to the ring, provide the attachment points for the blades, and allow positioning adjustments.
6. 6Select and attach the blades. Blades are chosen according to the required configuration and the exposure needed, then fitted into the ratchets.
7. 7Position and adjust the retractor. The assembled system is positioned and adjusted according to the operative requirements.
