Start With the Surgical Requirement

The configuration you need depends on the intended surgical application and the exposure required. Systems are commonly specified for general surgery, urology, gynecology and other open surgical procedures. No single configuration is suitable for every procedure, so it helps to list the procedures the set must cover before selecting components.

Choose the Retractor Ring

The retractor ring provides the framework around the operative field to which the retraction mechanisms attach. Ring options include round solid rings, oval solid and oval segmented rings, elliptical segmented rings, half circle rings, perineal segmented rings and ring segments. The choice depends on the incision and the setup required.

Select the Supporting Components

• Field Post — supports the retractor framework at the operating table.
• Horizontal Bar — provides structural support to the framework.
• Horizontal Flex Bar — assists with positioning the framework.
• Post Coupler — connects the supporting components together.

Together these components form the supporting framework that holds the ring in position.

Choose the Right Retractor Blades

Blade selection depends on the retraction required and on the configuration in use. Commonly requested options include Kelly blades and malleable blades, alongside Balfour, Richardson, Deaver, Harrington, Wylie, Scoville, St Mark's, rectal, vaginal, sternal and other compatible Bookwalter blade types. Blade size and design should be considered according to the surgical requirement; no single blade is best for every case.

Consider the Ratchet Mechanisms

Ratchet mechanisms clamp to the ring, hold the blades and allow their position to be adjusted. Each blade in use needs a ratchet, so the number and type of ratchets is part of the specification rather than an afterthought.
