A Bookwalter retractor is a table-mounted, self-retaining surgical retractor system. Instead of an assistant holding a hand-held retractor, a bar clamps to the operating table rail, a post carries a ring above the incision, and blades clamp to that ring with ratchets to hold tissue in a fixed position throughout the procedure.
